Ein Haus, das Freudenstadt Freude macht – beim Betrachten und beim Bewohnen gleichermaßen. Der moderne Entwurf der kubistischen Stadtvilla inmitten eines parkähnlichen Areals zieht Blicke an und schickt sie auf Entdeckungstour. Dabei nimmt sich der kompakte Baukörper selbst nicht so wichtig, sondern fügt sich harmonisch in die vorhandene Topografie mit ihrer leichten Hanglage ein. Der nach Süd-Osten ausgerichtete Wohn-Essbereich ist über Terrassen mit dem grosszügigen Gartengrundstück verbunden. Die üppige Bepflanzung fungiert als Sichtschutz und Grünfilter zur Straße hin und die Bauherren können neben der Morgensonne entspannende Aussichten ins Grüne genießen.

Vom Entree unter der markanten Fuge in der Fassade gelangt man ohne Umwege in den lichtdurchfluteten Wohnbereich, wo der aus tiefschwarzem Granit in die Wand integrierte Kamin das einzige Element ist, das die Rundum-Sicht nach draußen, auf den reichen Baumbestand, für einen Moment unterbricht. Der Esstisch verbindet den Wohn- mit dem Koch- und nach einem Schritt ins Freie mit dem privaten Lounge-Bereich im Garten, wo ein Außenkamin für Wohnlichkeit sorgt und die Grenzen zwischen innen und außen verwischt. Im Obergeschoss findet die Familie ihre privaten RückzugsraÅNume. Im Untergeschoss gelangt man über die Garage direkt in die offen gestaltete Garderobe. Im gesamten Haus dominieren neben weiß vor allem warme Farbtöne, Naturstein, Leder, dunkler Stahl und geräuchertes Eichenholz. Den eingesetzten Materialien wird in ihrer Reduktion und in der Mischung verschiedener haptischer Oberflächen besondere Wertschätzung entgegengebracht. So schafft die Architektur einen respektvollen Hintergrund für Möbel, Objekte und das Leben der Bewohner.

The urban location of the property led to another task: Berlin-Dahlem is a district that is characterized by a lot of green space with broad front garden zones and a wonderful, existing trees. Thus, the house needed to be in contact with its surroundings and still offer space for privacy.

In order to satisfy the desire for a communicative house, a design was created in which a generous double-volume with a gallery is positioned in the centre of an L-shaped building form. The two building components that meet here open up towards the garden and thus allow not only a view of the greenery, but also a view from the "children's wing" to the "parents' wing" or from the kitchen to the living room and vice versa. From all areas one can reach each other by eye contact or verbally via the airspace.

The façade of the building was divided into two layers, consisting of a glass-ceramic core and white plastered wall panels that "float" at a distance of 100 cm in front of the inner shell. These give the occupant a sense of security while at the same time - due to their distance from the glass façade - they allow light into the building's interior. Through this principle, the building also shows a certain openness towards the street without the need to feel observed inside. 

The wide projecting roof overhang provides shade in summer and visually closes off the second building envelope. The space between the glass façade and the wall panels provides space for shady and rain-protected seating outside. The combination of the reflecting glass level and the white surfaces "floating" in front of it gives the building a modern but also playful appearance.

By staggering the house on four levels, the small plot of land of just 530 m2 is optimally used. Thus, in the middle of the hip Bockenheim district of Frankfurt, intelligent architecture has created a terraced house with 395 m2 of living space - and all this without sacrificing garden and green spaces. On the contrary. An atrium in the basement, the garden with sculpture courtyard on the ground floor and four lushly planted terraces on the upper floors open up a view of the greenery on all floors and create an organic connection between living space and nature, inside and out.

The play of opposites also characterises the exterior: massive reinforced concrete meets slender glazing, white parapet walls meet dark aluminium slats, light and dark plaster in an interplay of contrasts. In the interior, natural, warm materials such as fine walnut parquet and limestone walls are contrasted with cool stainless steel and glass to create a modern, casual overall picture. The clear language of form, embedded in a lot of green and the open lighting concept do their part to dissolve the boundaries between inside and outside and give the living space size and width.

Hardly recognizable from the outside, but from the living room still the same view as 83 years ago: From the desire to share time and home with the family, the conversion and addition of another storey created sufficient space for the needs of parents, children and grandchildren. All apartments have separate access, so that privacy is maintained despite living under one roof. A generous double volume space welcomes the family on the ground floor. If you follow the black contoured stairs to the first floor, the floor-to-ceiling glazing opens up a fabulous view of the city. When the family are all together, they meet on the roof terrace or on one of the open spaces in the garden. Materials such as wood, stone and glass as well as a bright, friendly colour scheme, accentuated by dark contours and extravagant light objects make the interior timeless and do justice to the style of all family members.

The exterior is significantly characterised by the large opening on the south side. Horizontal bands, alternately in white plaster and dark aluminium, visually hold the three levels together and make the house appear light and elegant from all angles despite its cubist design.

Das Markenzeichen des extrovertierten Einfamilienhauses ist das monolithisch anmutende Dach aus grünem Schiefer, das optisch mit der Fassade zu einer Einheit verschmilzt. Gebrochen und aufgelöst durch kubistische Elemente und großflächige Fenster-Einschnitte, erzählt die Formensprache den Traum vom Einfamilienhaus in ganz neuen Worten. Auch die verwendeten Materialien tragen in ihrer Reduktion zur besonderen Ästhetik bei: grüne Schieferplatten im Kontrast zu weißem Putz und rotem Cortenstahl, der im Erdgeschoss in Form von Falt- Schiebeläden zum funktionalen Türöffner zum Garten wird.

Um die Besonderheiten der Architektur für sich stehen und wirken zu lassen, ist das Interior bewusst schlicht gehalten. Betritt man die Eingangshalle, wird man offen und mit viel Liebe zum Detail empfangen. Geölte Eiche ist der rote Faden, der sich durchs Innere zieht, wie der Schiefer über die Fassade. Von der Treppe, über Fenster und Wände bis zu den Einbaumöbeln. Darüber hinaus findet sich der Schiefer des Exteriors in Bodenbelägen, Bädern und einem Kamin wieder. Alles ist extrem offen, trotzdem fühlt man sich in den gut organisierten Raumfolgen geschützt und geborgen.
